How to Apply For Social Security Disability Benefits

In order to apply for Social Security disability benefits, you must complete an application with the Social Security Administration (SSA). There are three ways that you can complete your initial application: online, in person, or over the phone. There is not necessarily any benefit to choosing one method over the other. Simply choose the one that is most convenient for you.

Online. You can complete your Social Security application online at https://secure.ssa.gov/iCLM/dib. Note that you cannot apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) by using the online application.

In person. If you choose to complete your Social Security application in person, then you must do so at your local Social Security office. Your local Social Security office will only assist you with completing your application if you have a scheduled appointment. To schedule an appointment, you must call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. A representative will schedule an appointment for you with your local Social Security office over the phone. Be sure that the representative fully explains what documents you need to bring with you to your appointment. Show up to your appointment on time and with all necessary documentation.

Over the phone. If you choose to complete your Social Security application by telephone, then you must call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment. A representative will set a date and time when you can expect to receive a return phone call. Be sure to be available at the time scheduled and to set aside a sufficient amount of time to complete the application. Also, be sure to have any documentation that is needed at the time of your phone appointment. The representative will ask you detailed questions that you will need to be able to answer fully and accurately. Once your application has been completed over the phone, a copy will be sent to you in the mail for your signature. Make sure that you sign the application and return it to the Social Security office in a timely manner.

An Experienced Social Security Disability Attorney Can Help

If you are applying for Social Security disability benefits, it is a good idea for you to speak with an experienced Cleveland Social Security disability lawyer prior to completing your initial application. Your attorney can help you gather the evidence that you will need to include with your application in order for your claim to be successful.

Your initial application for Social Security disability benefits is extremely important. It is your first opportunity to present your claim for benefits. The Social Security Administration is not going to put your application together for you, nor are they going to assume any information on your behalf. It is your responsibility to submit an application that clearly explains your disability and fully presents the evidence supporting your claim for benefits. Failure to do so can result in denial of your benefits.
